Teaching/Outreach

I have over 20 years of higher education teaching experience, and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK. The audiences of my outreach work have included teachers, higher education instructors, professionals, high school students and young children.

Philosophy

Most of my academic teaching in philosophy has been at Ateneo de Manila University, where I have taught undergraduate core curriculum courses in philosophy (Philosophy of the Human Person, Philosophy of Religion, and Foundations of Moral Value), and electives for philosophy majors and MA philosophy students (e.g., Political Philosophy, Anti-colonial Political Thought). I have also taught professional ethics for the MA Journalism and BS Computer Science programs. My recent outreach work in philosophy has included the hosting of a decoloniality reading group for professionals (ongoing) and participating in a podcast on the inclusion of women philosophers in university of syllabi. I was previously a board member of the Philosophical Association of the Philippines, the largest professional society of philosophers in the country, and I am currently active with Women Doing Philosophy, a network of Filipino or Philippine-based women philosophers.

Philosophy and Education

At Ateneo de Manila, I have sought to enrich the curricula of the undergraduate and graduate philosophy degree programs by developing new elective courses at the intersection between philosophy and education, in line with the department's goal of developing its strength in philosophy of education. I have taught courses that straddle education and philosophy or social theory as a senior lecturer then associate lecturer at London Metropolitan University and as a teaching assistant for the BA Education Studies programme at the UCL Institute of Education, and I have also led an undergraduate module on philosophy and education for the UCL Summer School. Outside the classroom, I have assisted with the introduction to doctoral study module for the IOE Centre for Doctoral Education. I have, in addition, conducted teacher-training across the Philippines on approaches to teaching philosophy and Philosophy for Children. In August 2021, I co-convened a 3-day long conference on philosophy of education, which had more than 100 participants; as a fruit of this effort, we are about to establish the first philosophy of education society in the Philippines.
